CARS WITH SMOKESTACKS & OTHER ODD THINGS

I really did find a couple of cars with smokestacks.

Did having a smokestack make the cars go faster?  I could find no evidence supporting it, so who knows?

Then there were these babies driving around with gas bags on top of them.  Yikes.

Fill ‘er up!

This one appears to be full up & bursting at the seams!

I’m not sure this would be a safe way to travel?  Apparently it was somewhat popular during WWII when gasoline was scarce.

It just looks a little scary to me.

It seemed to work well enough, though.  And if it was really dangerous I think I would have seen pictures of some gastly (‘scuse the pun) accidents, but I didn’t.

This one wins the prize, however, with a brick chimney.  A not too shabby early version of an RV.  I wonder if there really is a small fireplace or wood stove inside?  The father was a traveling musician.

  1. I wonder what sort of fuel they were burning that they needed a chimney.

    1. I have a hunch the chimney was just to complete the look of a little house. It probably wasn't real. Then again we'll never really know unless there was more info on it, but I looked & couldn't find anything more about it.

  2. Exhaust gas to fill a balloon! Who'd have thunk it! Well, I wonder how they re-routed the exhaust after the balloon was full. And what on earth was the purpose? Very cool post, Gail...leaving me with questions!

    1. Whatever kind of gas they were using, I wouldn't want to do it. On the other hand, gasoline was scarce because of the war, so in order to get around people had to become inventive.

  3. I've never seen anything like those cars before. I suspect the gas bags held coal gas or methane which were fuels that were probably not under wartime rationing. But it can't have been healthy to drive or ride in a vehicle powered with such noxious stuff. I laughed at your last little house on wheels. I've admired many similar modern versions and even daydreamed of building my own, but never seen an example of an early RV like that.
