CARS WITH SMOKESTACKS & OTHER ODD THINGS
Did having a smokestack make the cars go faster? I could find no evidence supporting it, so who knows?
Then there were these babies driving around with gas bags on top of them. Yikes.
Fill ‘er up!
I’m not sure this would be a safe way to
travel? Apparently it was somewhat
popular during WWII when gasoline was scarce.
It just looks a little scary to me.
It seemed to work well enough, though. And if it was really dangerous I think I would
have seen pictures of some gastly (‘scuse the pun) accidents, but I didn’t.
I wonder what sort of fuel they were burning that they needed a chimney.
ReplyDeleteI have a hunch the chimney was just to complete the look of a little house. It probably wasn't real. Then again we'll never really know unless there was more info on it, but I looked & couldn't find anything more about it.
DeleteExhaust gas to fill a balloon! Who'd have thunk it! Well, I wonder how they re-routed the exhaust after the balloon was full. And what on earth was the purpose? Very cool post, Gail...leaving me with questions!
ReplyDeleteWhatever kind of gas they were using, I wouldn't want to do it. On the other hand, gasoline was scarce because of the war, so in order to get around people had to become inventive.
DeleteI've never seen anything like those cars before. I suspect the gas bags held coal gas or methane which were fuels that were probably not under wartime rationing. But it can't have been healthy to drive or ride in a vehicle powered with such noxious stuff. I laughed at your last little house on wheels. I've admired many similar modern versions and even daydreamed of building my own, but never seen an example of an early RV like that.
ReplyDeleteWell, he was a traveling musician so would have been right up your alley! :)
DeleteNever seen anything like any of those!!! (:o)
ReplyDeleteYou found some great photos to share! I think we are surprised. Love the little house car!
