MY OTHER GREAT GRANDFATHERS

This is, perhaps, a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it’s true all the same.  Because a professional tracing of my father’s ancestry was done back to William the Conqueror, I was able to take it back even further.  So keeping in mind the numbers are as near as I can figure, and the ‘likenesses’ were found online, here are:

 “My Other Great Grandfathers”

My 43xs great grandfather, Charlemagne, King of the Franks 768-814 & Holy Roman Emperor 875-877

My 41xs great grandfather, Alfred the Great

King of Wessex 871-899

My 39xs great grandfather, Ragnar Sigardsson Lodbrok, King of Denmark. (History is a little sketchy on his actually ever having been king?)

Was my 39xs great grandfather, Ragnar Lodbrok, as good-looking as Trevor Fimmel who played Ragnar on the TV series?  It would be fun to think so?

My 39xs great grandfather, Kenneth mac Alpin, First King of Scotland 843-858

My 39xs great grandfather, Robert I, King of the Francias 922-923

My 38xs great grandfather, Hugh the Great, son of Robert I, and King of France 923-987

My 34xs great grandfather, William the Conqueror, 7th Duke of Normandy and King of England

1066-1087. He married Matilda of Flanders who became the first officially recognized Queen of England when William declared her as such.

My 32xs great grandfather, Diarmaid mac Murchada

King of Leinster, Ireland 1126-1166 & 1169-1171

My 31xs great grandfather, Richard ‘Strongbow’ de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, at his wedding to the daughter of the King of Leinster, Princess Aoife nic Murchada

My 31xs great grandfather, William Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, Marshal of England, advisor to King Henry II, Richard Lion Heart, King John, and Regent of England from 1216 - 1219 when Henry III took the throne at age 9 years.

William was known as “The Good Knight”. He married Isabella de Clare, daughter of Richard ‘Strongbow’ de Clare and Princess Aoife.

My 28xs great grandfather, Edward I ‘Longshanks’, King of England 1272-1307.  He was only 14 when he married Eleanor of Castile - she only 12.  He was known as “Longshanks” because of his excessive height for the times at 6’2” - his exceptionally long legs most likely accounting for such height.

After Edward, my line drops down through Dukes, Earls, Colonels, Captains and finally regular people.  But it’s fun knowing, way on back there, I have a few kings in my background.

Note:  Even though a few million other people can claim the same, it’s still fun!

  1. Yep, I'm among those few million others...at least back to Edward! The le Clares as well. Isn't it fun? We might also are related to King Arthur...though his lineage is a bit iffy, since Guinevere didn't have his children in any of the tales!
