INDOORS & CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Grampa reading to a granddaughter.  My husband and one of our three beautiful granddaughters in 2003.

I caught my youngest sister playing the piano down in the laundry room in 1959 – a terrible place for a piano but it was the only place we had for it.  It was old and painted mustard yellow.  I think I’ve mentioned before my Mom wanted to paint it pink with daisy decals in the indentations to match her laundry colors, but it never got done. Too bad. It would’ve been cute.

I caught the same sis a few years later in 1966 sewing on my machine.

Dad caught me reading the evening paper - The Oakland Tribune - in 1963.

I caught him unawares in 1967!

I also caught him napping later the same year.

And making sandwiches in 1968.

In 1961 Mom caught him nibbling on the Christmas turkey carcass.

But Mom also got caught earlier that same day preparing that same turkey for roasting.  You can just see the end of it sitting on the table behind her.  Looks like she's cutting up celery for the stuffing.  Remember when we actually stuffed the stuffing INSIDE the turkey.  We were apparently living dangerously back then.

After Mom was through stuffing the turkey and getting it in the oven, my other sis got caught cracking nuts for something we were having that night. To the best of my memory, I think the nuts were for Persimmon Pudding - a molded 'pudding' served with lemon sauce.  Soooo yummy!  Looks like she's 'testing' one of those nuts.  Isn't that how we did it?  Crack a nut, lay it aside, crack another, 'test' it, and so on.  I'm sure I remember that's how it went. :)

Same sis was also caught yakking on the phone sometime the following year.

My brother and Dad were caught in the garage checking out tools in 1967.  My Mom knit the sweater my brother is wearing!  She knit gorgeous sweaters for all of us.

And in 1972 I caught my son introducing “Lambie” to our new color TV.  Before we got the color set he really wasn’t much interested in watching TV.  But with the color TV?  It was Sesame Street, Captain Kangaroo, & whatever came after that every morning without fail.

  1. Great indoor shots of your family. That last made me laugh at showing Lambie the great color TV. I wonder if Lambie came from that sock puppet show. You probably remember, but I don't at this moment.

    1. Oh my gosh, I do remember the lamb puppet on the Shari Lewis (I looked her up) Show. The lamb was named "Lamb Chop". Her show debuted in 1960 and my son watched her in the early '70s, but I don't remember if it came on in the morning or the afternoon?

  2. I knew you'd have a "few" good photos for this theme. Not surprising that the camera comes out for holiday snaps. My family archives have similar pics of kitchen prep through the generations. I liked the piano photo and can imagine it in yellow but not pink, I think. Recently I noticed on our local neighborhood website that there were several upright pianos in the freebie listings. Sad that such an instrument becomes a give-away and even a throw-away item.

    1. The plight of upright pianos is unfortunate. I have no idea where the mustard yellow piano wound up - my parents donated it somewhere after I married & moved away with no room for it. I now have a beautiful studio Yamaha piano. It's lovely, but it's a tight fit in our smaller home & I'd like to replace it with an electronic keyboard, but my husband won't let me give it away & no one is interested in buying it - even for a bargain price. Really sad.
