ALL IN THE FAMILY TWO BY TWO - PART 1

 


Once upon a time there was a young girl, Lillian Adelle Whitney (my Mom), seen here with her mother (my Grandma Louise), Bertha Louise (Parton) Whitney in 1928.

The young girl had a grandmother, Johanna Magdelina (Hedmon) Parton/Kellstrom, seen here on the right with her daughter. Bertha Louise (Parton) Whitney.

The young girl also had a younger brother (my Uncle ‘Jim’), Ira Edwin Whitney, the pair seen here on the beach at Santa Cruz in 1928.

And here they are 45 years later in 1973.

The young girl grew up and met a nice young man (my father), Herbert Kinsey Bradley, who came from good family.

Here are his mother, Harriet Bell (Smedley) Bradley, and his father, Frank Herbert Bradley, pictured on their honeymoon in 1906.

And later in the 1920s or early ‘30s.

The nice young man, & the young girl/now young woman, were married on June 17, 1939.

Here she is with her mother in 1942

And again with her Mom in 1964, come to celebrate her daughter’s 46th birthday.

And in 1983 that young woman and nice young man were still happily together with four grown children and six grandchildren.

    Great look at bridal outfits down the ages. I love the dramatic change in Harriet Bell (Smedley) Bradley between 1906 and the 1920s. My grandmother eloped in the '20s. I think it was a very freeing time for women.

    A wonderful medley of pairs. I like seeing how the fashions change over time. The 1928 brother sister photo is a fine portrait that is obviously a real family treasure.

                                                            A TRIP TO YO-SEMITE IN 1874 – PART 5 So . . . we left my great grandfather in Yo-Semite Valley drinking mint juleps at White’s Cosmopolitan House, taking an evening stroll along the Merced river, and making plans for the trip to Vernal & Nevada Falls the next day.  And onward we trek . . . After a hearty breakfast, we got in the saddle early, and stopped at Vernal Falls cabin*, but Mrs. Conant and myself were the only ones to go clear to the falls at the expense of a complete ducking as we had neglected to get rubbers. *This cabin was at Register Rock – so called because people used to carve their names in the rock – and one could rent rubbers there to keep from getting drenched if one decided to go all the way to the falls or up the ladders.  One also paid a toll there if they were continuing on to Nevada Falls. Though J.K. mentions going clear to the falls, he doesn't say anything about going up the 80 feet of ladder

WRITING: SUSTENANCE FOR THE SOUL

  I’m a writer.  I don’t know about everyone in my family, but I know my paternal Grandmother wrote a story about a doll named Belle, and my father, who loved reading stories in the Saturday Evening Post, tried his hand at writing one he titled “Play It Again, Sam”.  I read both stories and both were good – but never published. I’ve always loved to write.  As a child I remember writing short little stories about things and when I was in school I was always eager to take on the extra assignments researching and writing about the subjects we were studying at the time.  It was nice that I got extra credit for doing it, but I did it because I loved doing it.  I’ve written a couple of novels, a number of novellas, and stories for my grandchildren, plus the occasional newspaper article and other odd bits here and there.  None, with the exception of the newspaper articles, have been published, but that doesn’t make me any less a writer, of course. WORKING ON BUILDING THINGS

  My Dad built himself and my Mom Adirondack chairs, then created his own pattern to build a little one for me.  They were painted yellow – my favorite color.  I loved my little chair.  I wonder if that’s why yellow is my favorite color? J Some years later Dad & my brother built a roof over the terrace in our back yard. The terrace roof completed created a great place to gather in the summer – to play ping-pong or just sit around.  The ping-pong table was collapsible & easy to store off to the side when not in use. I designed & my husband built this front entry deck for our house in Groveland.  It was a tricky design because there is a stairway leading down from the front door to the garage behind the railing behind the bench, so we came out the front door and either went down the stairs to the garage, or came forward out onto the deck.  They don’t show here, but we had flowerboxes behind the railing where the candy-canes are crossed.  Obviously decorations for Christmas w
