AN EXTRA SHARING

 I had to share these pictures with you.  This is a little 11-day old pigmy goat kid.  It was born early and the mama’s milk hadn’t come in yet so she couldn’t nurse it.   So the gal who owns the goats has been hand feeding it and it’s doing remarkably well.  I had the chance to see it because I was getting a pedicure and my pedicurist works with the gal who owns the goats and this little guy was in a box next to her work station.  The box is 2 ft. tall, but this little dickens can already jump out of it.  He’s not been walking all that long, though, and the floor is a little slippery, so often when he’s gamboling about his legs slide out from under him & he flops down, then gets right back up and continues bounding around – his little tail shaking back & forth as he goes.  He is soooooo cute!  His name is Zeke – short for Ezekiel.  My daughter was with me and took the pictures.  :->

  No cars.  Just trains, carriages, horses, & mules. Over the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing my great grandfather, John Kinsey Smedley’s story of his trip to Yosemite in 1874.  He kept a journal of the trip of which his daughter, my paternal grandmother, Harriet (Hattie) Bell Smedley Bradley, made a handwritten copy. Funny thing about that – in his journal, my great grandfather said certain things I guess my grandmother did not feel was proper for her father to have mentioned – such as swear words or the fact that he liked talking with women.  They were neither married nor engaged at the time – though they did later marry – but her father was in a serious relationship with the woman who would become my grandmother’s mother, so not cozying to the idea of her father swearing or liking to talk to other women, my grandmother made no mention of any of that in her handwritten copy of his journal.                                                             A TRIP TO YO-SEMITE IN 1874 – PART 5 So . . . we left my great grandfather in Yo-Semite Valley drinking mint juleps at White’s Cosmopolitan House, taking an evening stroll along the Merced river, and making plans for the trip to Vernal & Nevada Falls the next day.  And onward we trek . . . After a hearty breakfast, we got in the saddle early, and stopped at Vernal Falls cabin*, but Mrs. Conant and myself were the only ones to go clear to the falls at the expense of a complete ducking as we had neglected to get rubbers. *This cabin was at Register Rock – so called because people used to carve their names in the rock – and one could rent rubbers there to keep from getting drenched if one decided to go all the way to the falls or up the ladders.  One also paid a toll there if they were continuing on to Nevada Falls. Though J.K. mentions going clear to the falls, he doesn't say anything about going up the 80 feet of ladder

THE ANCESTOR HAT PARADE

  My husband’s ancestors:  His Grandmother Daisy May Elizabeth Young, her husband (or husband-to-be?), Fred Latham Perlee, and her sister whose name we don’t know.  Fred is wearing a rather frumpy-looking straw hat, and the girls are sporting quite the elaborate chapeaux. Daisy in the center with Fred on her left.  Don’t know who is on her right?  The fellows in bowlers, and Daisy in a simple flatish hat.  No idea why they’re all carrying flowers? My husband’s maternal grandmother, Lillian Ross Pringle Brasier on the left on her wedding day in 1909 with one of her older sisters.  Lillian was dressed in a suit, ready to depart with her new husband on their honeymoon. A hat and frilly bonnets for all three: Lillian Ross, c.1914, with her two daughters Phyllis, and Virginia Rossmore Braiser – my husband’s mother.
