NEW BEGINNINGS: BIRTHDAYS ARE A NEW BEGINNING TO THE FOLLOWING YEAR
Three weekends ago I titled my post "BIRTH-DAYS". This weekend I'm posting "BIRTHDAYS". Both are new beginnings in
their own way. This was our son’s first
birthday. Looks like he’s not quite sure
what to do here?
Oops. Where did that bright yellow flickering thing
go? Meanwhile, Dad thinks it’s time to
take the cake away and cut him a piece!
On his third birthday he
had a birthday cake with three candles which he now knew what to do with.
For his sixth birthday he
had a birthday bash held at the local Veteran’s Hall. So nice.
Big table, plenty of chairs, and easy set up & clean up! And the small rent for the hall was well
worth the fee. Great way to go. I did at least one more party for him at the
hall. Boys’ parties are a little more
boisterous than girls’ parties and the hall provided plenty of run-around room!
On his 16th
birthday he celebrated with friends, but first he shared a cake with the
family!
Our oldest daughter’s
first birthday and yes, she got a few fingers in that cake before it could be
moved. Luckily it wasn’t the whole cake
that met with disaster, only her first piece of it and we caught that on video
camera. She took a bite and somehow
managed to send the rest flying off her highchair tray and onto the
floor. Oops!
For her second birthday
she had a Pooh Bear cake which was a last minute surprise. I was shopping that afternoon and there was a
bake sale going on outside the store. I
had planned on just buying a packaged store cake when I saw that Pooh Bear cake
on the bake sale table. But it was $12.
which was a bit of change 50+ years ago, so I went on into the store and bought
some pretty cupcakes instead. When I
came out of the store, the bake sale folks were starting to pack up and one of
the women asked me if I was still interested in the Pooh Bear cake which was
still on the table. I started to shake
my head, but she said “You can have it for $6.00 and that’s how our daughter
had a Pooh Bear cake for her 2nd birthday! (And we ate the cupcakes another day)
On her 7th birthday, she had a party where she excitedly opened some lovely gifts.
And here she is blowing
out her 12 birthday candles at another party with her big brother standing by
and some friends watching.
Next it was little
sister’s first birthday and boy, was she happy and excited about it!
She had two cakes for her
3rd birthday – one for her party where she happily holds up a gift .
. .
Birthdays do mark special occasions for people...where everyone can gather to celebrate their having been born. But hey, the mom did all the work of giving birth! Why don't we celebrate her?
ReplyDeleteREALLY!!! (celebrate the Moms who did all the work (for hours & hours!)(ouch)
DeleteAll Happy Happy Days! As for celebrating Moms on birthdays, I full agree! Mother's Day is not enough.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like your comment on my German female entertainers probably discussing and then selecting their wardrobe for a new song or dance. That would be the fair democratic way. But judging by some of the fashions on other cards, I think many of these young ladies were compelled to accept a man's final judgement which often ended up with a style that was not very flattering.
You're most likely right about a man making the final decision or even the only decision about the girls' costumes back in those early days. Women didn't have a lot of choices back then!
