CELEBRATED PICNICS & FUN

¯  “If you go down in the woods today you’d better not go alone.

If you go down in the woods today it’s better you stayed at home.

For every bear that ever there was will gather there to sit there because

Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.” ¯

(I wonder if the checked tablecloth in the prompt picture is red?)

¯ 'If you go down to the beach today you’re in for a big surprise!

If you go down to the beach today you’d better not hide your eyes!

For mama bear and two little cubs are gathered there to sit there because

Today’s the day they're gonna have a picnic.' ¯

Family reunion on the beach at Tahoe with snacks and music. ¯

Waiting for the play to begin at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe.  We were down there in front, 5th or 6th row back on the left – to see Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona“ after enjoying a picnic dinner on the sand.  Some folks got really fancy, bringing their picnic dinners in ice chests which, when empty, were then used as tables covered with lovely tablecloths, adorned with silver candlesticks, and they ate off of fine china with silverware and drank from crystal stemware.  As for us – our dinners came out of a beach bag and we ate off of paper plates & drank straight from the soda pop can of our choice.  To each ‘his’ own. J

A Mother’s Day lakeside potluck feast laid out at Pine Mountain Lake

Four little Hummers preparing to greet (happily or otherwise) a red-headed fifth flying in to join their picnic in our front yard.

Siblings & cousins celebrate the prizes of their Easter Egg hunt.  All candy eggs now.  They used to hunt real hard-boiled eggs until one year when the clean-up crew missed a couple of unfound eggs.  They weren’t hard to find a couple of months later when the forgotten eggs’ strong effluvia led right to them!

A roadside picnic in the mid 1940s.  L-R: my first cousins once removed, Cecily & John, my Grandaunt Marie, and my Grandma Louise.

  1. what fun picnicking! I loved the bears on the beach and cautious (smart) people! But my favorite had to be the last one by the road. Our picnics were often on quilts over grass, and watching out for the ants to appear!
