IN HGH PLACES

Me, myself, and I, my brother, middle Sis, youngest Sis, and Mom standing on a bridge over the Merced River in Yosemite National Park in 1956.

When I was growing up my bedroom was at the top of our house which was on a hill so I had a wonderful view over all the rooftops below and on down to and across San Francisco Bay.  It was especially beautiful at night as I could see the lights of the City and some of the bridges.  (That’s my little parakeet, “Tweetie”, enjoying some free time outside of his cage in 1960.)

I took this picture of my youngest sister while hanging out of one of the windows pictured above.  A couple of years later I wouldn’t have been able to take this picture as my Dad had built a roof over the patio below.

My 3 daring idiot kids (top to bottom: son, eldest, & youngest daughters) up a tree in 1986.  When I think of how easily one of those dead branches could have snapped! Whew.  I did, however, take time to run inside & grab my camera to take this picture before I ordered them out of the tree. :[]

Same son up a tree in the foregoing photo, now up a ladder installing a ceiling fan for us.

3000 feet up a mountain by way of a gondola to see the whole of Lake Tahoe’s 22 mile length by 12 mile width from the deck overlook in 2006 with my eldest daughter. (A composite photo, obviously)

The view from the gondola going up and coming down.  Those are all gambling casinos, hotels, motels, & etc. below in South Tahoe’s gambling mecca, “Stateline”.

The Mount Solaro chair lift on the Isle of Capri that eldest daughter & husband rode during their trip to Italy in 2014.  Had I been with them, I might have braved it but I would have been nervous the whole time which is too bad.

Eldest daughter and husband at the jump-off spot to go zip-lining in spring of 2017 close to home.  They wanted me to try it too, but I was too chicken.

  1. Oh yes, the kids up a tree. I do remember the last time I climbed a tree, and my friend was quite amazed (since I was in my 40s probably). I liked the feeling of swaying with the wind, and all the branches were quite sturdy. But please don't ask me to be in those chairs up high, as I'm quite skittish of being high without a nice sturdy structure below me. It was great to see your childhood home as well as your children! I would have put all the cushions on the floor if my son stood on the very top of a ladder as yours did to install a ceiling fan! What a feat!

    1. He's an electrician & is probably up on ladders like that all the time. So far he's never fallen. Hopefully he never will. :)

  2. Some of those HGH perspectives are as scary for the cameraperson as for the subjects! I love trees and as a kid enjoyed climbing them and building tree houses. But after Hurricane Helene brought down thousands and thousands of trees in our mountains, I learned that trees are not so strong as we might think. Many were completely uprooted and there are sections of forests obliterated by the tremendous wind forces. A walk in the woods is now risky because of the chance for dead trees to suddenly collapse.

    1. When we were living in amongst the redwoods in northern Calif. I was amazed at how easily a whole group of them would go down together in a heavy storm because as tall as they grow, their roots are shallow & spread out, intertangled with each other so when one goes, several go.
