Farmer’s markets in Tuolumne County usually offer more than just fresh produce, jellies, jams & honey, etc.  They also include home-crafted items and, more often than not, musical entertainment.

My brother & his open-air market in 1951.  A few years later and he might have had some pretty righteous musical entertainment for his market there in our backyard from over the back fence thanks to the fellows below rehearsing in their garage!

I know I’ve bragged about this before, but what the heck!  It’s fun knowing where they started and how far they went.  Tom and John (Fogarty) had three other brothers – Jim (the oldest brother), and Dan and Bob (the youngest brothers).  Not much is known about them.  I just remember the five of them, when they were young, climbing all over the roof of their house.

    Well as you are also musically inclined, that must have been such a fun time, to hear those boys as they were starting out with their rock n' roll! Yes outdoor markets this time of year are certainly fantastic opportunities for obtaining nutritious foods, as well as seeing regulars if you visit frequently. I was planning to shop at ours this morning, but the humidity and heat are just a tad too high for me.

      I've been noticing the reports of high temperatures plus high humidity back east. We've been having a lovely respite from high temps here for the past week with temperatures only rising into the 80s after having suffered through several weeks of constant temps in the 90s to 100. The difference between our high temps and yours, however, is ours is a dry heat. Still hot, but not miserable. (and thank heaven for AC) I can't imagine temps in the 90s with 80% humidity or worse!

      Well done! You caught both my ear and appetite too! We have similar farmer/craft markets here that often include live music. I was at a street market a few weeks ago and was entertained by a very accomplished accordionist. Not a common instrument anymore. As for your CuZns band, if you hadn't caught their joke, Cu-Zn refers to copper-zinc, an alloy better known as brass. Very clever. I might use that pun in a future story.

      Well, I'll be! I just thought CuZns was a 'cute' way of saying cousins. I had no idea it had a 2nd meaning. They were tricky! :)

  Clovelly (pronounced Clove-ily as in happily or merrily) Harbor. The light-colored building on the left is the Red Lion Hotel.   Clovelly is an historic, car-free village nestled on a cliff known for its cobbled traffic-free streets and working port. CELEBRATED CHRISTMAS CARDS This is kind of long so you might want to pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea or eggnog before you start?  Maybe add a biscuit or two, or perhaps a slice of my Grandma Louise’s fruitcake? I’ve been known to choose lovely Christmas cards to send out to family & friends such as this cheerful neighborhood scene. Or this snowy one in the town of Groveland, California where we lived for 28 years. We had visited friends in Alaska the year we sent this card out. This was the card we sent for Christmas the year we met “Ella”, the little pigeon who suddenly flew into our lives.  I couldn’t have found a more perfect card. J And this one went out the year my Dad passed away shortly before Christmas.  It just seemed so right. MOUNTAINS: MERCURIAL, MYSTIC, MAJESTIC, MAGNIFICENT

  My Dad in the 1930s with, I think, Mt. Shasta behind him.  Or it could have been Mt. Lassen?  Both are in California's Cascade mountain range.  Unfortunately there was no description on the back of the photograph. Mount. Shasta.  I tobogganed somewhere up there in the early '60s back when Shasta boasted a ski resort.  The town at the foot of the mountain is Mount Shasta City. Mt. Shasta seen from the small community of McCloud, with a red barn to add an artistic touch. Lake Almanor in northern Calif. where the Sierra and Cascade mountain ranges meet, with Mount Lassen in the background. Mt. Edgecumbe in Sitka, Alaska.  We were here in 1997 to visit friends.  It’s an amazing place with hundreds of large and small forested islands all around – some of the larger ones supporting homes which have to supply their own water, sewer systems, & electricity.  And of course they have to take a boat to town to buy groceries, see a doctor, or whatev...
