OLD TRUCKS & BRICK WALLS

Concord, NH Ford mail truck

No brick wall here, but I didn’t want to leave this dump truck out.

Interesting old truck from the 1920s.

The lettering on the truck in the prompt photo reminded me of a weird thing that happened years ago.

I was driving on a 4-lane highway in the slow lane heading up a hill and came up behind a large truck & trailer, so moved over into the fast lane to pass it.

As I drove past the truck I thought I saw a man dressed in red & blue crouched in between the cab and the trailer of the truck???

With no one behind me, I slowed down to let the truck catch up to me so I could take a better look at it thinking I must have seen some sort of painting on the side of the trailer?  But no.  The side of the trailer was blank – nothing painted on its gray side, and no one was crouched between the cab and trailer?  Shrugging, I sped up and continued on my way.

A while later I was heading up another hill and, seeing smoke at the top of the hill, slowed down to see what was going on?

A truck & trailer were parked off to the side of the road.  The driver was down out of the truck crouching on the pavement between the cab and trailer watching smoke billow out from between them.  I didn’t notice what the driver was wearing, but the cab of the truck was red with blue lettering

  2. What a great collection of early trucks. And a guy leaning on the spare tire and inner tube for one, reminding us how a flat tire in those days meant having to blow up an inner tube. Not sure when tubeless tires came to be...probably before I got my drivers license in 1956.

  3. This was a treat as I am sort of a vintage truck guy. For my graduation from college my parents gave me a Toyota truck. And I have since owned four small trucks putting over 100,000 miles on each. My current Nissan is now 20 years old and doesn't get driven much anymore. I think of it a my motorized wheelbarrow. It's funny how we remember brief strange events that occur while driving. Perhaps our concentration behind the wheel makes things more vivid. Decades ago I once narrowly missed being hit by a car on a busy four-lane highway. A second earlier I had reduced speed and a moment later this car ran a stop sign on a side road while attempting a left turn. It was going so fast that it overturned into the oncoming lanes as I passed the junction. Had I maintained my speed me and my truck would have been struck on the passenger side with great violence. I still often think about it when I realize I am being impatient and driving too fast.

    1. Sometimes you really do have to wonder if you were getting some sort of 'message' when you follow a different pattern for some reason. I was driving at night one time when a weird red line suddenly appeared for a second in front of me. Of course I slowed down wondering what the heck that was all about??? A couple of minutes later I went around a curve & found a big buck standing on the highway in my lane. Because I'd slowed down earlier, I was able to slow down further giving him time to get out of my way. Had I not slowed down earlier, I would have hit him. Y'just never know!
