DANCING WITH THE STARS, er, FOLKS

 


I was 11 or 12 when I was dancing with a folk dance group in grade school.

My eldest daughter was around the same age when she dressed up for Halloween as a Dutch girl in a similar costume.

In 1997 we were visiting friends in Sitka, Alaska, home of the New Archangels Dancers and caught one of their shows.  It’s an all women dance troop and they were amazing.


They perform all over the world.


Cute costume in either color.


I remembered "Snow White" wore one of those black corset-vests in one of my favorite books from my childhood.

And yep – there she is.

“Beauty” from “Beauty & the Beast” in another of my favorite childhood books called “Old Time Fairy Tales” wore one too.

But why be limited to black when you can have beautiful prints like these?

  "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest one of all?"

    Beautifully done! Folk costumes are a common way for smaller nations celebrate their heritage but I've always wondered what they think when people of foreign countries (like ours) imitate their style. And what do you suppose they would dress up for an American folk costume? Baseball caps and bib overalls?

    It seem you and I are the only remaining Sepians this weekend, Gail. I hope Barb will rejoin after she settles into her new home in Colorado.

      Yeah, it looks like you & I are it this weekend. Like you, I hope Barbara's move goes well & she returns to us as soon as she can. Likewise, ScotSue, who broke her foot a while back & is now getting around in a moonboot will come back to us. I'm encouraging her not to give up on us! Hopefully the others are just off on vacation?

    Yay Barbara! We miss you. Glad to hear you're settling in okay albeit a little stressful to be expected, as well as getting used to the altitude change. Here's hoping for a quick recovery to the change and you're back with us soon! :))

TENTING IN TENTS ON THE OL' CAMPGROUND

  My husband’s grandfather, Harry Brasier, before he was married so sometime before 1909, went canoeing across five Canadian lakes with several friends.  These are two of those friends sitting in front of their tent somewhere on the shore of one of those Canadian lakes. My Dad and his younger sister in front of the family tent at Meeks Bay, Lake Tahoe in the early 1920s. My Dad in the early 1930s with his one man wonder tent. 1945 – My Mom stands in front of the inherited Bradley family tent during a short camping get-away with my Dad on a break from dealing with three little children 5 years old and younger. A PICNIC IS A PICNIC WHEREVER YOU HAPPEN TO BE – SAND, DIRT, GRASS, ROCKS, PATIOS, DECKS, A LIVING ROOM FLOOR, OR AN OLD HELICOPTER PAD

  Summer, 1962.  Picnic IN the sand.  You’ve seen this picture before.  We were at Stinson Beach and the wind was blowing pretty hard, but we hunkered down behind the sand dunes and on this particular trip, managed to eat our lunch without crunching on too much sand.  And yes, there was the time we went to Stinson and gave up picnicking there because it was just too windy, coming home to eat our lunch on a blanket spread out on the living room floor in front of a cheery fire Dad built in the fireplace.  But hey, it was still a picnic! J Stinson Beach.  It’s always windy here because it’s so wide open.  But it’s a great place to explore.
